While the battle against childhood obesity begins at home… Many schools are amping up their efforts to provide healthier meals in the lunchroom. Our Amber Schatz shows us how 16 school cooks from across the state are mixing up a healthy cuisine, for kids. (Chef Dave Bruno) 19:22 andamp;quot; All stir-frys start with GGS, ginger, garlic, scallion.andamp;quot; The smells and sounds of a good stirfry… (NAT-sizzle 7:51) But the taste… probably isn’t as salty as what you’d find in a typical asian restaurant… (NAT 8:28) andamp;quot; We can give it a little taste.andamp;quot; These cooks are tasting, and testing out new recipes that aim to cut back on the high fat and calorie-packed meals found on many young people’s plates. (Chef Dave Bruno) 16:38 andamp;quot; In the home if parents don’t concentrate on eating more fruits and vegetables and a balanced diet, then kids get that from parents and schools are doing a great job trying to make sure they offer those kinds of foods, they might not be getting at home.andamp;quot; Chef Bruno says the cooks are mixing up around 50 healthy food recipes in three days. (Joyce Strom/Hazelton) 27:13 andamp;quot; We’re making flatbread pizza right now and it doesn’t seem really hard to make and it looks really good.andamp;quot; They’re tossing more whole grains into that school lunch favorite… For other meals, they’re mixing lean meats into ground beef, adding a lot more fruit and vegetables, and just plain getting creative with nutrition. (Bruno) 15:50 andamp;quot;A lot of people would just put bread in there, but putting a high fiber food like oatmeal is a great way to incorporate fiber and flavor, more vegetables.andamp;quot; (Theresa Stretch/National Food Service) 4:39 andamp;quot; The key to all of this is it has to taste good, and if it doesn’t taste good, will the children eat it? We know they won’t.andamp;quot; That’s why these cooks are spicing up some old recipes… And adding new components to take back to their lunchrooms. (Strom) 26:43 andamp;quot; The teachers are really good at telling kids they have to try everything… 26:54 andamp;quot;you might have to try it 5-10 times and then decide oh I really like that.andamp;quot; And if you want proof that meals can be healthy and taste good… The proof is in the puddin’. (Strom) 28:04 andamp;quot;By the end of the day there’ really no reason to go home and make supper because that’s all you’ve been doing is cooking and eating!andamp;quot; Amber Schatz, KX News. The andamp;quot;Healthy Cuisine for kidsandamp;quot; program is through the state’s department of andamp;lt;a href=andamp;quot;http://www.kxnet.com/t/educationandamp;quot; class=andamp;quot;kxInlineLinkandamp;quot;andamp;gt;educationandamp;lt;/aandamp;gt;… and the national food service management institute.
