“What’s the Scoop?” in North Portland has unique flavors — and a unique way of freezing their ice cream. KOIN Local 6′s Jenny Hansson reports.
>>> when you think of ice cream, you think of chocolate, vanilla strawberry, but how about liquid nitrogen? >> it’s not a flavor but it’s how what’s the scoop in north portland makes its ice cream. it sounds like a science experiment so i went to this positively portland business to see how it works. >> at first glance, it looks like any other locally owned ice cream shot. >> can i try the vanilla also? >> this one chocolate. >> i’m going to pour the rest of the base into here. it’s still a little bit cold. >> they even make their own syrups and cones. so what’s so different about what’s the scoop? here’s the scoop: they use liquid nitrogen to freeze their ice cream. >> we turn on the liquid nitrogen, it pipes on top of the liquid, it’s never absorbed at all. it freezes the top layer immediately, and then the blade was mixer mixes it into the st of the ice cream until finally, that cycle
